Happy spring, friends!
As we all collectively defrost and flowers bloom, I wanted to share a handful of my favorite stairway mural projects, which are often grand and striking. Though complex and intricate to design, it’s always a huge treat to see the results.
Stairways define the space they’re in, and no two are alike. A flight of stairs can be curved, straight, double, L-shaped, cantilever— the list goes on and on. The bespoke nature of our tailored mural production process lets you work around these distinctive features— this way, even a space as complicated as a curving stairwell can feature a beautiful uninterrupted landscape.
In painting my original scenics, I dreamt of helping designers and homeowners imbue any area in the home with a sense of beauty. A muralpaper can transform a transitional area like a stairway into an engaging experience. Why trudge up a blank stairwell when you can stroll through the rolling countryside?

Design by The Fox Group | Photography by Lindsay Salazar | Mural is Aldsworth Faded
The Fox Group used our Aldsworth Faded mural in Tan France’s entry and stairway makeover. Warm, welcoming lighting from the sconces and rich wood tones play beautifully with the natural tones in the muralpaper.
Mural is Aldsworth Faded
This homeowner’s curved double staircase creates a unique circular sitting area, which we had the pleasure of papering— so lovely! They selected Aldsworth Faded for this design project.
Design by Underwood Design | Mural is Barringtons Rich
One of my all-time favorite projects, so stately and dazzling. This three-story curved staircase project used Barringtons Rich, for which we made a custom extension to fit the Underwood Design team’s wondrous vision.

Design by Phoebe Howard | Mural is Barringtons Grisaille
This project by Phoebe Howard is so clean, neutral, and classy. A timeless look! She used our Barringtons Grisaille mural wallpaper.
Mural is Cotswolds Mist
I adore the natural wood of this stairway in conjunction with the ethereal, airy greens of our Cotswolds Mist. This enchanting stairway gives such a cozy feeling!
Design by Studiolo Design | Build and install by Eric Zahn Builders | Mural is Aldsworth Warm
This is a recent project and fresh install, designed by Studiolo Design and installed by Eric Zahn Builders. This clean, angular staircase charmingly blends modern and timeless elements.

For those looking to get started on their own stairway mural—
I’m excited to hear what you’re drumming up for your stairway project. If you already have labeled elevations, CAD files, or detailed drawings, you can send those over to our sales team, who pass them along to our estimators. Our sales team can be reached at studio@susanharter.com.
If you don’t have these measurements on hand, it can be a bit of an intimidating task to measure spaces like these. They can be so elaborate, and no two stairways are the same. Sending any photos and videos our way, along with any rough measurements you may have, is a good way to give us an idea of where you’re at and what exactly we’ll need.
Here’s a very basic set of measurements you can include with your photos or sketches:
– Floor-to-ceiling height
The height of your overall wall on each floor level.
– Chair rail height
If you have a chair rail, the height from chair rail to floor, or chair rail to stairstep.
– Stair angle
Measure at a handful of places along the stairway for an average. The angle of your stairs can be measured using most smartphones— the iPhone, for example, has a pre-installed Measure app that includes a level (see example photo).

These simple measurements and photos of the space are a great starting point for our estimating team. With these, they will either be able to provide a very rough quote or get you started with some measurement clarification questions.
If you have an upcoming stairway project, whether you’re an interior designer or homeowner, I can’t wait to hear more about it.
